1912, Saint Petersburg, Russia. Scientific and technological progress is advancing, aiding the police in catching criminals. New forms of transportation, chemical analysis, and fingerprinting are now tools of the law, but they do not stop the brutal murders that plague the city. A new killer emerges during this period, a fact noted by the experienced 42-year-old surgeon Platon Voskresensky. Well-known and often assisting the police in solving difficult cases, Voskresensky finds himself faced with a series of strange and inexplicable murders. He concludes that many of the victims share similarities and that they are all the work of one person - a predator hunting humanity. Each of the killer's crimes is a performance for the police, as he feels untouchable and continues his spree until he is caught. The maniac is cunning and clever, leaving no trace on his victims. The investigators are at a loss. However, Voskresensky has studied all of the killer's victims and understands who they are dealing with. Now, a showdown between the killer and the surgeon begins, with the stakes being the death of one of them.
